Dagur, a Mongol island in the Sino-Manchu world, conserves a dialect with some archaic pecularities and peculiar innovations, important for the Mongolian as well as Altaic language history. In some degree Dagur may also be considered a surviving variety of the language of the Kitan. Samuel E. Martin's Dagur Mongolian Grammar, Texts and Lexicon (Bloomington 1961) is a description of Dagur, a Mongolian dialect, based on the speech of Peter (Urgungee) Onon, a Naun Dagur.
